In the clurb (America), we all fam (not sleeping well right now)
Content to get us through the week + resources for Election Day
Welcome back to Hot Tip, the newsletter that is thinking about
every second of today, and here for you with a combination of inspiring tidbits, fun distractions, and resources for voting.
Reminder! As much as we all want it to be over Tuesday night, it’s not likely to be. So buckle in for a few days of hell, and take care of yourself however you need. I’ll be baking along to the sweet sweet sounds of Steve Kornacki and his map math.
Keep Kamala and Carry Onala. You’ve likely already seen it, but just in case you haven’t — Kamala Harris made a massively charming and fun appearance on SNL this weekend. Watch it and falalalala.
How to get involved ON TUESDAY. If you’ve already voted and feel the urge to do a lil’ something extra today, here are some of my recommendations:
Cure ballots in Nevada or in Michigan. (This means a voter’s ballot hasn’t been counted due to a signature issue. They can fix it easily, and you can help by calling and telling them how. Training takes about 20 minutes at the top of the call and is very simple.)
Call voters in Pennsylvania, probably the most important state of this election cycle. Make sure they plan to get to the polls and vote Harris + downballot Dems. You can also text bank for PA if you don’t love being hung up on a lot.
Post on social media!!! The margins could be scary thin, so even just motivating one more person to vote can make a difference!
Voter protection hotlines. If you are personally having any issues or witnessing anyone else having issues voting, here are the numbers to call by state.
Polling hours. Don’t pull a Jerry Gergich and miss your chance to make history.
TLDR: Just get there on time!!! If you live in Georgia and need a ride to the polls, you can get one for free with the New Georgia Project. Lyft and Uber will also be offering discounted rides for voters. In LA you can ride the Metro for free. I don’t normally endorse scooters, but Lime is offering free 30-minute trips to voters who want to scooter to the polls if they use the code “VOTE2024.”
If you’re somewhere else and need to find a ride, reach out. We’ll find you one.
Hot tip: Bake the day away. Tonight, I made (a version of) cinnamon rolls with my challah recipe. I also caramelized apples, dates, and raisins together with maple syrup and miso to put on top, and it temporarily distracted me from the full-time terror I’m experiencing otherwise.
Use your hands. I used this video a ton during the first few weeks of Covid, and I found it incredibly relaxing. Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s placebo effect, but either way, you can just massage your own hands for a few minutes to the tune of a British man with a perfect podcast voice and some calming music.
Freebies + discounts. Take your I VOTED sticker to Krispy Kreme for a free glazed donut. Hide out at Dave and Busters (?), which is apparently offering $5 beers and half-priced games all day, among other things. Junior’s in NYC is offering half-off cheesecake slices, which we may need to get through the other guy prematurely declaring victory (he ~will~ do this — but the Dems have a plan to deal with it.) More Election Day deals can be found here.
Watch this. Singin’ in the Rain is one of my favorite movies of all time, and my ~hot take~ is I think the true star of the movie is Donald O’Connor. This performance has absolutely nothing to do with politics or our modern terrifying world, and his talent will blow you away no matter how many times you’ve seen it. It’s the perfect four minute distraction. (Hotter tip: Just watch the whole movie.)
Have a lil faith. Don’t get me wrong, it’s really, really hard. And we don’t want to be too comfortable or confident; we learned that the hard way in 2016. The stakes are so high, and I don’t know anyone who isn’t really feeling the overwhelm and fear right now. So if you need to tune out, tune out. Go for a walk without your phone, or do a workout, or watch a dumb movie. Start drinking at 11 AM. Idk!! There’s no right answer. And if you need to tune in, like I do, watch men play with zoomy maps all day on CNN and MSNBC. Just do what works best for you.
+ There are some positive signs we can look to throughout the day: A highly respected poll in Iowa showed Harris outperforming Trump. Women are voting in huge numbers all over. Omaha, Nebraska’s single electoral vote may separate from the rest of the state and go for Kamala Harris (and get her to 270.)
And she ended on a joyful, positive, united note. Let’s do this, pals.
Thank you for reading! We’re nearly to the end of this hellacious journey. Don’t let RFK jr. take fluoride out of our water, okay? My teeth are sensitive as it is.
WAIT, it's borderline cruel to post pics of those buns with no recipe! 🤤
